SKAN TALK

Skan is the energy through which time moves. Like the ripples from a stone cast into the water, our actions create energy through which we all move. Sometimes the ripples rappel and sometimes they draw-in. Sometimes, they simply allow for us to float and reflect. Welcome to a place of higher consciousness.

So what is a Sustainability, anyway...and what does Zen have to do with it?

Despite what many think, sustainability is NOT an exact science.  It evolves with time and is subject to shifting forces.  Though the foundation of sustainability is the confluence of environmental, social, cultural and fiscal responsibility, the answer to "what is sustainable" is necessarily impacted by everything from technology to consumer demand (with a little Al Gore sprinkled in from time to time).

The true common denominator of sustainability is higher consciousness.  As with individuals, companies must continually search their souls to answer tough questions about what they do, how they do it and the impact that has on their neighbors.  A truly sustainable company is a great corporate citizen, championing the health of the Earth and society, while being profitable and responsible to its owners and shareholders.  To be that champion requires a keen awareness of your company and its surroundings.

The general definition of Zen is "to contemplate deeply."  Look at any truly sustainable company, like Steelcase, Interface, Cliff Bar, Seventh Generation and so many others that have surfaced more recently and you'll find deep contemplation within the very fabric of the business, from the Executives to the laborers.  Sustainable companies do not simply create an initiative or two.  Rather, they are constantly assessing every aspect of their business including material design, manufacturing processes (energy, water, waste), operations, transportation, employee vitality, social and community programs, and more.  To this end, sustainable companies contemplate their very existence on a daily basis, not as a marketing tool, but as the very driver of value and profitability with the net effect being favorable for everyone.

Sound impossible?  It's not.  More and more examples of companies that have woven sustainable philosophies into their companies are coming on-line and the proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating!

So how do we all get to this place of higher consciousness, and to profitability through true stewardship -- how do we make really great companies???

It's all about contemplating deeply, rising above the bar, thinking out of the box and being willing to take action.

Whether your audience is C-Level, middle management or laborer, whether big or small, whether to entertain or educate, Zen and the Art of Corporate Sustainability will be the perfect addition to your next meeting or event.
